The police in Gothenburg will find it easier to monitor the city’s central parts with the help of drones, following a new decision, writes Göteborgs-Posten.
For example, drones can be used in drug crimes by following suspicious perpetrators from a distance. Major music and sporting events and other special events will also get monitored with drones.
– The police have no self-interest in monitoring or watching the public, it is so that we can detect crime and do justice, says Kim Kanefur at the Gothenburg Police
The police already use the method around the country. For example, in Gothenburg, drones were used in the violence after the Black lives matter demonstration in early June. But the city police have now decided to expand its use. The decision means that the police can fly over a larger part of Gothenburg and do not have to make different decisions about each situation.
Since January 1 this year, the police do not need a special permit for camera surveillance. However, the authority is obliged to consider whether the surveillance’s purpose outweighs the public’s interest in not being monitored.
