The Italian defense and aeronautics technology group Leonardo has invested in Skydweller Aero, which develops drones powered by solar energy.
According to the company, the plan is to produce drones that can fly virtually indefinitely, without the need for external energy replenishment.
According to the hopes, the drone type will make self-propelled flights next year and be in production in 2021. The testings take place in Spain.
The goal is for such drones to operate from air bases around the world, and thus be airborne much longer than today’s aircraft. According to Leonardo, the drone system should not be subject to international arms restrictions.
Companies such as Airbus, Boeing, Facebook, and Google have also shown interest in solar-powered drones.
